The first reference to the celebration of the mother can be found in the times of Ancient Greece. That feast was taking place then to celebrate spring, by worshipping Gaia, in other words mother-Land, mother of all Gods and humans. Womans maternity role is of paramount importance. Women take part in the creation of new human beings and this is a privilege and a gift of God.
In modern times, the second Sunday of the month of May has internationally been recognized as a day to celebrate mothers, as a worldwide token of recognition for the supreme mission of maternity and of its social present.
Women are no longer exclusively mothers today. Our society wants women to also play the part of working mothers.
Approximately 5.000 women are currently serving the Hellenic Police Force, representing around 10% of the staff. Most of them are married, while 1.258 are mothers. 159 of them have more than 3 and up to 6 children.
By paying tribute to the Mother, we are honoring the human kind.
By honoring the Mother-Police Agent, we are expressing our gratitude for all that she symbolizes and for all the sacrifices she makes in order to contribute to the Police Forces work. Love, affection, understanding are gifts that women-mothers have by their nature and these are the features that help them in performing their duties with more than enough sensibility and compassion.
May you always be healthy and have the strength to rise up equally well to the double part that life has chosen for you, the part of working mothers.
